Ram DDR5 and LPDDR5: everything that we know until today

Every few years the launch of a new generation of standard DDR RAM, where each generation brings with it some improvements in performance and the amount of energy expenditure and capacity available in addition to the high price of course. For a long time, the fourth generation of this DDR4 standard has been sufficient for most applications, but in the past two years, with the escalation of the war of increasing the processor cores between Intel and AMD increased the need to develop the fifth generation of this standard and access to the RAM DDR5 so that it can keep pace with this rapid development of processors.

With the previous generation (DDR4) almost five years since its launch, it is becoming clear that the release date of the DDR5 RAM is not far away, as SK Hynix, a leading manufacturer of memory and semiconductors, has set an approximate date for when the memory will be available in the market, So far, many of the specifications and features of this new generation have been announced, which we will talk about in this article.

Performance and capacity available

The DDR5 will come almost twice as fast as the first generation of DDR4 RAM. It will support speeds of up to 6400MT / s (million transfers per second) compared to DDR4 which comes at 3200MT / s, and it can reach speed in some designs from DDR5 RAM to more than 6400MT / s via breaking speed.

Some improvements have been made to the memory architecture and how the processor handles them. According to Micron, the 3200MT / s DDR5 RAM will deliver a 36% higher data transfer rate compared to the same DDR4 speed, as well as an 87% increase over the 4800MT DDR5 RAM. / s.

The T / s (transfer per second) is one of the approved units for determining memory performance and means the number of operations you can perform per second.

The 3200MHz RAM is actually running at 1600MHz, but because of the DDR memory that means double the data rate (Double Data Rate), the memory performs operations and exchanges data with the up and down clock pulse, which means that the memory Operating at a frequency of 1600MHz, you can execute operations at twice that number at the same time.

Almost a year ago, SK Hynix announced the completion of the development of DDR5 RAM twice the capacity of DDR4 using the same manufacturing technology (1ynm) for some types of them, and will come with a capacity of 16Gb per chip compared to the capacity of 8Gb DDR4 chipsets manufactured with the same technology, as the RAM consists of chipset It can be up to 16 slots per stick and it is difficult to increase the number of slides by increasing the size of the piece because the RAM must be limited by specific dimensions in order to be easily placed on the motherboards.

Energy consumption

One of the most noticeable improvements among generations of DDR is the savings in energy consumption.

SK Hynix announced that the DDR5 RAM it has developed can achieve a transfer rate of 6.5Gbp / s over a single data transmission line with a capacity of 1.1V, which will be the effort that most types of RAM will work DDR5, and while not a qualitative leap from the effort The 1.2V on which the DDR4 RAM works, but it is good compared to the high speeds that this generation can achieve.

On the other hand are smartphones and some laptops that use LPDDR RAM, which differs from the base DDR in the amount of energy it consumes and the heat it releases to be suitable for devices running on batteries permanently. In each new generation of this memory standard, the effort you will work on is further reduced than the corresponding DDR generation to be more energy-efficient and more convenient to work with mobile devices.

A year ago, Samsung announced the first 8Gb LPDDR5 RAM built-in 10 nm technology, so it can work at 1.05V with a speed of up to 5500Mbp / s or 1.1V and 6400Mbp / s, compared to the previous LPDDR4 standard does not exceed the maximum speed of 4266Mbp / s With effort 1.1.

Also, this RAM will come with the Deep Sleep Mode technology to save energy when the device is in sleep mode. 30% more than the previous generation.

Price and release date of DDR5 RAM

Since 2017, JEDEC has been developing standards for the DDR5 RAM and has announced that it will be ready by 2018, but so far, JEDEC has not yet fully developed the DDR5 standards, although it announced the completion of the LPDDR5 standards since February of This year. JEDEC specializes in setting standards for many electronic chips and semiconductors, such as DDR, SSD and UFS storage media, and many more.

SK Hynix announced the first DDR5 RAM since 2018, which of course still does not meet all the JEDEC standards that have not yet been terminated, but then stated that these memories will be ready by the end of this year. SK Hynix also predicted that DDR5 RAM sales will account for 25% of the market share of random memory in 2020, and will increase to 44% by 2021.

It is expected that we will not see a computer or a smartphone that works with this new generation at least before next year. DDR5 and LPDDR5.

Nothing has been announced about the price by any of the big memory manufacturers, but of course, it is expected to be expensive in the first period compared to the previous generation, and the price of RAM is always low and slow to decline and may even rise sometimes. Also, the price of the DDR5 RAM is not the only thing you have to worry about.
